After a brief review on the popular blog, You Aint No Picasso, the interest in Jason the Swamps slow beats, lazy strumming, and lo-fi ethics seemed to grow overnight. With its spacious layers, the self titled album expands on what came before, with spectacular results. The album willingly glides through Panda Bear pop with plinky plonk keyboard arrangements, to tunes that wouldn't look out of place on a Paul Simon record, all that is missing is the African choir. Although, with the layers upon layers, you often get the feel that they are actually present! This self titled release also features Robby Massey (dessktop) supplying xylophone at the end of I Can Live Again, and Jessi Lively sings backing vocals on the gorgeous final track, There Was Light, which helps crystalise Jason the Swamps position, as producing some of the finest lo-fi pop around.

This two track offering is the latest release from Minnesota's TASRU. The brainchild behind this project, a certain Thomas O'Neill Grathwol said that he didn't want to wait for an entire album to be ready before putting something new out on Rack & Ruin... and boy are we thankful! If the title track "Grapefruit Gun" is anything to go by, then his as-yet-untitled next album is going to be one to look out for! The distinctive TASRU qualities are still there, obscure film dialogue, foot tapping beats, and a tune that will stick in your head, and have you whistling along to in no time. The "B side" is a tweaked out remix of a new song called "The Stranger". Grathwol's DIY ethic is still there in abundance, however, these two tracks seem to have the polish to take them to a newer level. A recent review likened his previous offering "An F in Health" to an early Baby Bird record, which did seem to be a fitting description to that album. "An F in Health" was full of ideas, outtakes, and was a precursor for what was to come. Well, what was waiting in the wings has now arrived.

Consequently, the music of ZAUS oscillates between minimal and metal, ranging from spontaneous improvisation to organically grown conglomerates of multifarious sounds as well as from highly scientific concepts to cryptical nonsense. The standard procedure of producing a ZAUS track is fairly simple: Unsuspecting musicians are frequently lured into the recording studio where they first of all are going to be sedated by mind-numbing substances, then involved into some highly absurd conversation and finally gently forced to contribute spontaneously to the recording by treating their instruments in a way mostly not familiar to them. After a couple of such events, the output is carefully mixed up in Norbert's brain & food processor and out comes the unique music of ZAUS. Besides these doubtful activities, ZAUS has been producing music for performances, theater, film and TV with constantly changing line-ups. 'Congregation', containing tracks recorded between 2004 and 2008, is an illuminating journey through spaced out funk rocktronica, quirky pop interpretation, dark sordid grooves and complex electroacoustic soundscapes. Track 10 is an unedited 11 minutes excerpt from the socio-acoustic live performance "SONIC MAZE", premiered in collaboration with jazz actionists k3 in Salzburg in March 2008. Participating in the Congregation were: Thomas Dinnobl, Stefan Wuketich, Roman Kovacs, Herbert Koenighofer, Silvio Sinzinger, Simone Beer, Martha Jeitler, Voka, Andy Collett, Ing. Loop, Rokko Ramirez, Klaus Kircher & Robert Kainar Contact: http://www.myspace.com/zavsoid noor(at)utanet.at

«In little over two months, Philip and Ilia from St. Petersburg return with a new release Jazzy ambient called 'Still Fire'. This new work is perhaps heavier on the dramatic side, thanks to some deliberate connections to a couple of works from film director David Lynch: Twin Peaks the TV series and Inland Empire, a 2006 movie which has a most convenient plot connection to Eastern Europe countries, namely Poland. Both 'Lynchean' works tell stories around girls who get into complex episodic troubles of some sort. Anyway, Philip uses some well placed samples to strenghten the dramatic tone of the Still Fire pieces.

This album is a lot different from 'Un[view]mask[ed]'. While the previous release was strongly supported by rhythmic patterns and loops - via sampled drums and bass lines, among several other instruments - 'Still Fire' is a completely beat-free ambient experience, with Ilia Belorukov's trademark sax punctuating occasionally the dense drone surroundings with distinct reverbed phrasings and sounds.
If you're into space-ambient-jazz you can't miss this release.»

Now, Philip Croaton speaks of Still Fire:

«Still Fire was an inalienable part of my Unachievable û€“ a dark, noise-drone album. And after I've finished recording of bass part for SF, I had an idea to put in this composition another instrument û€“ saxophone. I gave first version of SF to Ilia Belorukov with a green light to making everything he likes into it.
At the end we had a strong saxophone-based line as an add to minimalistic bass part, witch became a powerful duet.

After some time, I decided to continue the storyline of SF. So I began thinking about a concept, and replaced bass with electric guitar. And because I really enjoyed Ilia's ideas on SF, I was sure that he would take a part on SF II.
Third part of Still Fire became completive, generalized and fully independent of previous parts. It took all the best of SF and SF II with an extension of new ideas, which made it unique. Once again Ilia Belorukov took part on the writing process with some saxophone additions.» - Pedro Leitão

Moljebka's set started with quiet field recordings and slowly evolved into drony and noisy wall of sound, hypnothising with its stillness and calmness. Great concert by quite well known in the experimental scene Mathias Josefson partnered here by Karin Jacobson. Electronics, objects, prepared instruments make a stunning sound in this 40 minutes long recording, a documentation of the Krakow gig. If you haven't been there at Caryca, just download the file now and listen to it as loud as your neighbours allow. Or even louder - who cares about the neighbours when you've got such a great music to listen to?
