This is what test tube said about this release
«You are in the middle of a moor surrounded by rustling leaves, misplaced smells and the wind howling around you. You’re peaceful but intrigued. You’re incomplete. You’re human and still you feel like this music, created mainly by machinery, is wiring you to earth. Luís Fernandes is the musician responsible for these dreamy and subtle moods. Presenting his project as 'the astroboy', using synths, guitars, tr606 (a drum machine by Roland mainly used in the early acid house music scene) and sampling, he has been able to develop and present textures of sound that become appealing as you keep listening to them. Exploring melody and drone, and obtaining balance between an atmospheric line of sounds, “A Derrota da Engrenagem” consists of a symbiosis between synths, guitar and samples. You should try it.» - Nuno Silva

«On his debut album 'the astroboy' suggests a codified description, a personal struggle, a relentless conflict that seeks an end, as is clear from the names of his songs. The result is nothing but a sensitive and serious record that will keep you from moving away from your music player. In "A Derrota da Engrenagem", the songs presented by Luís Fernandes seem to be somewhere between post-rock, (occasionally) experimental, and some sort of atmospheric cruise. You'll picture one of his captain's logs, a report that will not appear abruptly, that will not produce harsh sounds for distracted listeners. It might be a little hard though for those with spiritual breathing difficulties to survive this cruise, but if you choose to go on a trip with the astroboy you will be able to gaze at the stars through the amazing glass of his spaceship...» - Filipe Miranda

Sound synthesis; an electric guitar; A Roland TR606 (vintage drum machine used in the origins of the acid house); musique concrète stuff, namely sound sources (noise) collected and properly manipulated; Sampling; finally a subject with a considerable creative imagination in what concerns to the musical and capable musical conception of ideas taking to cable the production of a great quality album, practically alone by himself and with few resources. Luís Fernandes, guitarist of the Braga pop rock band frequency, comes in A Derrota Da Engrenagem on The Astroboy's pseudonim. In spite of it being edited recently, the presented album is already considered by some as one of the best of the Portuguese alternative scene of beginnings of 2007. And it is not very difficult to explain the reason. The musical language that can be listened here meets extremely taken care, sending us for something close of Mogwai, Jony Greenwood, Thom Yorke, Radiohead, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Boards Of Canada, and an entire series of bands and musical projects of nowadays that already became a reference in our musical choices, they represent the best than it has been done in the last time at the level of the coalition among two musical languages that more and more walk in parallel senses: the electronics and the pop/rock. Actually, if the bands behind mentioned are some of the best act done abroad in the last time at this level, it remains me then to say that is impossible hearing A Derrota da Engrenagem without we be of all strange to the quality of what is presented us: a series of resonant landscapes that you/they stroll among Shoegaze, Drone, and contemporary Pop/Rock, and a language extremely taken care, endowed with a considerable aesthetic sensibility, the one which and impossible be of apathetic rest. If many think that already everything is made in relation to the synthesis of musical languages that you/they do nowadays and that the Portuguese popular urban music is very on this side of the expectations of that that we can hear at level of imported music of the anglo-saxonic countries then they make a mistake because A Derrota da Engrenagem is mine to see at the level of that that it is had done abroad on these last years in these prisms. A disk to not to lose, that can easily be heard and transferred through the official site of the Portuguese netlabel test tube in http://www.monocromatica.com/netlabel/releases/tube067.htm. However, it won't also be of despising the limited edition in Cd, edited recently by the hands of the publisher lovers&lollypops, elaborated by the cãoceito, and that of rest, it is an object to which we are unable to be indifferent for the little conventional but original way in spite of everything as it was become pregnant Not also to lose the dates in the Mercado negro in Aveiro (10 of Março of 2007), in o meu merçedes (to 23 of Março of 2007) and in the teatro circo in Braga on June 28, 2007.
