LM013 - Tobias Kazumichi Grime - compiled elements — 1996 - 2004

Tobias Kazumichi Grime sent us 3 disks with material out of which we selected the best cuts. Together they form an excellent cross section of his audio art. Although the structure of his compositions develop only very slowly his sound palette is exquisite. It is therefore that we cordially recommend this artist.

Tobias Kazumichi Grime is an Australian artist, playfully exploring the fields of electronic sound and its performance, screen based motion graphics, and interactive screen based projects. He works as a new media designer in TVC, film and motion graphics design at Animal Logic in Sydney's FoxStudios.

REVIEWS

These recordings sound as if he mic'ed the forrest then tried to recreate what he heard in an all electronic clicking palette. Very cool stuff, it has a power and strength but is subtle about it, not over the top.

Tobias Grime is a sound artist from Sydney and this collection of tracks was compiled from three cdrs that he submitted to earlabs.org. Recorded over a span of 8 years, the tracks have a good sense of flow and coherence, so I guess the label did a good job in choosing tracks that work well as a unit. Grime explores drones and ambient textures and at times the music is visually suggestive. No doubt this is a result of Grime working in TV and film. "Campfire" could be straight from a nature documentary, with its processed marimba and bongo type sounds. "Aphelion 2" is a dynamic composition with changing sheets of tones ending in processed water sounds. "Atmos" is Grime at his most hypnotic -an extended wash of light sound that later is augmented by a looped rhythm. A very pleasant release.

i downloaded some of these tracks and they are quite wonderful in their subtelty. think soundscape sound design meets glitch. less is more. nice one.
