The Guanxi pseudonym is orchestraed towards 'a sui generi sound' through research, investigation and with a hunger to explore a constructed visual and non-subjective disposition.

"Graveyard Shift" contains 5 pieces of complex and playful sounds from guitar, piano, bells, strings, flute, vocals, field recordings and electronics. Some of the pieces have a noisy and harsh character of a musical sketches, others operate with droning elements and a more calm ambience. And some combine both things. If you want to find a category for this, forget it.

For me the most precise analogy would be the sound world of a modern metropolis. You can hear layer over layer of multiple elements which are structured and arranged into a current impression. But it is constantly changing and moving. With every listen you get a different layer of "Graveyard Shift". One time it seems to be a loud and unorganised cluster of tones, the next time you hear a reduced and humming melody, hidden under other elements before. Be curious and adventurous, you will be surprised.

Oskar Hallbert is a Swedish composer who makes minimal music; tranquil melodies, documentary field recordings and the warm hiss you get from old microphones, casette tapes and an out of date mp3-player. You might know him from his former online releases on Zymogen or Rain Music. He has also released physical albums on small underground lables around the world, most recent on U.K. based Heat death.

The EP "doodling" consists of 5 tracks and is 12 minutes and 12 seconds long. All songs are like little folk-miniatures for instance containing simple guitar-figures, a toy keyboard and field recordings. The feeling of the EP reminds me of old photographs found in the attic, with buckled corners, covered with dust, and with faded colouration. They are like pieces of frozen time, they tell a fraction of a story.

Saito Koji continues to produce great single-track longform drone-pieces. Remember his latest release on SEM "Ocean"? Or his former works like "Beautiful" or "Candle"? He is just perfect in building up drone-loops over 30 minutes to one hour and they are never getting boring.

"Tokyo Morning Loop" is a 45-minute-piece. The loop repeats over and over in this piece but every time you listen you find another overtone, another little bit of melody you didn't recognize before. Especially in the background-texture you’ll find variations and shiftings due to the listening.

My recommendation is to put up your headphones, close your eyes and relax.

After his "Nordic Recordings" and "Southern Recordings" Edu Comelles aka Mensa returns to Resting Bell with a new two-track-EP. Besides his work as composer and sound designer Edu also runs the fantastic Audiotalaia-netlabel.

Both tracks on "Braid Heritage" are alternate (extended) versions of compositions originally released on the album "Moorland" via Test Tube. The work is strongly related to Edu’s recent sound project "Walking Composition", a great concept between technology and nature. The general sound is shifting between deep droning elements and more rhythmical glitches and bleeps, layered on top of each other and beautifully woven together.

All recordings done in Edinburgh's Heritage of Braid between June and August 2009. This album is a live recording using Walking Compositions Material. Edited and mastered in Valencia, Spain.

Special thanks to: Martin Parker, Andrew Spitz and Chris Bathgate who encouraged me to stay on the forest.

Similar to my previous release, Commute, which was an exercise in revisiting a past experience, the Anniversary ep is an exercise in revisiting a moment of time. Parts of my wedding were documented with field recordings. This included pre-ceremony unpacking / chatter / music, post-ceremony celebration / music, and a hike up a mountain. This material became the album's skeleton. The guitar and French Horn were exstracted from the original field recordings.

I decided to honor the original rural conditions for playing music at my wedding and record the release with acoustic instruments only. The result is a group of dusty organic pieces that sonically represent a mountainous hike in mist and the day's memories, as far as weather conditions will let you go. A french horn bellows and the distance on an early May day in northern New Hampshire.

Time is a strange thing. Two and a half years ago (65 releases ago, in netlabel-speak) Resting Bell released offthesky's "rare decay". A timeless and beautiful 4 song EP. I didn't hesitate a second when Jason Corder asked me if I'd be interested in a re-release of his musically related “du-soleil” EP which was originally released via atmoworks back in 2007.

"du soleil" is not only fully remastered, but it is also extended with three fine remixes from Darren Mcclure, Billy Gomberg and offthesky himself. So all in all around 54 minutes of pure bliss - not really an EP anymore I suppose. As I listened to "du soleil" it was hard for me to believe that this work is even dated. It sounds fresh, gentle and bright with the same timeless quality, you can find in all of Jason’s releases. "du soleil" is a very calm ambient-work with many subtle melodies and musical ideas hiding inside.

Last but no least, the three additional remixes are quite stunning: Darren McClure's rework presents a multifaceted structure of evolving and lush tonal climates. Billy Gomberg brings a moody and diffused interpretation with subtle tone resting upon a bed of ash like analog texture. Jason's own perspective is a soft re-synthesis of compositional elements and samples used throughout all 4 pieces in "du soleil". This group of additional treats, makes the perfect landing for a work that certainly stems from somewhere above.

Resting Bell is very happy to welcome Damian Valles. Damian is a Canadian multi-instrumentalist who creates ambient/experimental works based mainly on solo guitar. He utilizes a wide range of sources to expand his sound which include a variety of percussive elements, piano, and field recordings. Past releases include a full length on the excellent Under The Spire imprint, and a 3" EP on Standard Form. The latter being the first in a series of limited 3" releases called "Rural Routes" that he is curating for the label.

His work "Bow Echoes" contains 6 audio-tracks with a duration of about 40 minutes and a 10-minute video for the opening track "Ground Truth". Compared to his other releases, Damian put his focus more on drone- and ambient-scapes; however, "Bow Echoes" still has a very, very strong melodic center. The dominant washed-out and fading guitar-work give the whole release a touch of beauty and sublimity. Blurry shades, dimly lit landscapes, and warm colours layer and fade into each other. In addition, the video for “Ground Truth” perfectly visualises the sound and feel of the complete release.

Enjoy this wonderful release, full of warm drones and melodies, and welcome the spring (at least on the northern hemisphere)!

For a long time in my life I've had really problems to listen to jazz music, especially the very free, improvised forms. That changed when I discovered the Insubordinations netlabel from Switzerland, where you can find extra-ordinary releases on exactly this field. And of course my musical taste also changed in that period, so that all comes together.

Now I'm really happy to present you a very, very fine piece of improvised music, made by HKM+ and diatribes together with Piero SK, Robert Rehnig and Johannes Sienknecht. HKM+ is an ensemble for electroacoustic improvisation which consists of Ludger Hennig (software instruments), Christof Knoche (bass clarinet / electronics) and Markus Markowski (prepared guitar/ software instruments). diatribes were a trio in the beginning and changed now to a polymorphous formation, accuratly incomplete, extending its spectrum with guest musicians.

These eight people meet last year in an abandonned building in Leipzig and recorded a big bunch of material, which finally became this wonderful 50-minute release. It is raw, acoustic (even if there are software elements in it) and free. In my ears the acoustic, organic element is the best part in this release. You can always feel the instruments, the movement and the creative space, created by the whole group.

Counterspark is the solo project of Johnny Utterback of Richmond, Virginia. A visual artist by trade, Johnny began experimenting in sound in 2006. From that point on, Counterspark has been a project of experimentation in the world electronic music. Rich textures and lush soundscapes with an underlying tone of optimism are all intertwined into the melancholy compositions that are Counterspark.

The sounds of The Halpern Experiment were inspired by a "healing sounds" cassette, found in a thrift store amongst the piles of one hit wonders. Not finding any value in the cassette’s actual listening experience, analog sounds of the worn tape were still intriguing. With the focus on the textural elements of analog cassette and relationships of the melodies of the tape, the project became a healing method in itself. Providing refuge from reality in a swirling world of analog color and warmth, The Halpern Experiment was two years in the making of editing and abstraction.

With mastering by Tanner Menard, the eight movements truly come to life.

Derrick Hart is an American musician. You might know him from his "Songs From A Cross (The Sea)" EP on 12rec, a release in which Derrick shows great musical talent and a really fantastic sense for song-writing and melodies.

With his "fall asleep to this" EP he goes a more experimental and meditative way. The five tracks are mainly based on vocals, even though there are no actual lyrics. "kontakt" and "when someone loves you no more" are performed only with his voice, captured with a contact-mic, processed and converted. "when someone loves you no more" begins things with a profound wailing on behalf of anyone who has ever suffered before blooming into some incomprehensible sonic victory. "emporia", "colors that surround you" and "kontakt" are beautiful melodic miniatures and "wilderness of the city" ends it all with strings and a relentless, hypnotic groove. But always is Derrick's voice as the key element in each song, tying everything together.

To follow Derrick's advice: The EP serves as a meditation tool to listen to before sleeping. So plug your earphones in and fall asleep.

Lexithimie is a sound solo project founded by Alexis Béchu with focus on healing sound, extended classic, modern ambient and with care for minimal details and natural color. After a bunch of releases on various audio labels such as ropes swing cities, October Man, Hibernate recs and Under The Spire lexithimie’s music creates synthetic spaces from processed instruments, field recordings, layers of repetitive tones and sound infusion.

His two-track EP "Leontopodium" is a beautiful example for this. 24 minutes full of decent soundwalls, layers full of sublime melodies, slightly shifting and processing. The strongest motif in "Leontopodium" is in my ears the aspect of nature. Both tracks have a very organic, warm and natural feeling. They are also perfect examples for building ambient music with minimal structure and melodies, and changing both elements over a long distance of time in a very subtle and gentle way.

So you get the perfect soundtrack for drifting away, coming back and drifting away again. I recommend to listen to this with headphones which let you even more explore the depth and space of Alexis's work.

Fallen are brothers Andrew and Richard Fryer who come from the south of England. The group was formed in 1999 making spooky neurotic jungle. Over the course of nine releases they have gradually evolved into a more meditative proposition and are now purveyors of a sort of outsider dreampop. Fallen’s last recording, “A rare camouflage” is available on the cookanegg imprint. Andrew is also the man behind Boy swung tunnel whose album “The sun sparks” is on the Format noise label.

Their EP “feathers” consists of 6 tracks with a complete duration of about 22 minutes, and it is definitely the catchiest release on Resting Bell up to this moment. The music of Fallen is hard to describe. Referring to their own words it is dreamy pop-music with a great sense for melodies and dramaturgy. You can also find these wall-of-sound-elements which make me think of shoegazer-bands from the nineties. Noises, crackles and loud parts. But behind all this there is always a melody shining through. There is always a leitmotif which guides you through the song. And there is always an element which you can’t get out of your mind.

Enjoy this great release while warming your hands at the chimney and get your personal catchy tune right away.

Resting Bell is really happy to welcome herzog, a.k.a. Bill Bawden and his latest EP “first summer and the running dream”. Bill’s previous releases on Serein were the first netaudio-works I got in touch with. And you also might know him from his fantastic release on 12rec. So what an honour to do a herzog-release here on Resting Bell.

“first summer and the running dream” contains 5 tracks with a complete duration of 30 minutes. Compared to his earlier works “first summer...“ has a more droning, a bit distorted character. The sounds are layered very softly and sublime to a very harmonic composition. The overall mood is quite laid-back with noisy, distorted splinters. The noisy elements are getting stronger to the end of the EP but it leaves still a very harmonic picture.

For me a perfect soundtrack of the season. Watching raindrops on the window and feeling wind in the hair.

It seems like Astrowind are having the most constant release-frequency on Resting Bell. One release a year, always around September and October. It is the third release on Resting Bell, after "Somewhere The Music Had Been Played" in September 2007 and "Der Leuchtturm" in October 2008. They also released on 12rec and Electrosound/Musica Excentrica.

"Kurland" contains 15 pieces and has a total duration of over 60 minutes, a real longplayer. Kurland is the german name for one of the cultural and historical regions of Latvia (in english: Courland). So you have scenic titles like "Kurland", "Nebel", "Sounds Of The Shores" but also pieces about aerospace and deep sea. Compared to the older Astrowind-releases the new work sounds a bit deeper and adult. You still find the synth-drones and the noises and glitches but everything is arranged very focused, very sublime. Every element is set very sensible and well chosen.

And again Grisha Kochenov did a really impressive artwork.

After his fantastic "Beautiful"-CDr on SEM Saito Koji releases another great track on Resting Bell. Besides his work on SEM you may know Saito from his releases on Magic Book Records, Kesh Recordings and Gears of Sand Recordings.

"Candle" is a single 30 minute-ambient-drone-track, and the title fits perfectly to the presented music. Various themes are shifting softly from front to back and back to front. Flicking and shimmering like candle-light. Saito creates a deep and warm sound-carpet and he uses only a guitar. Layering and merging one motive into another, which gives the track an enormous deepness and meditative approach.

You can close your eyes and feel really comfortable in this smooth and warm environment. Perfect match for the cold and rainy fall here in northern europe.

gillicuddy is definitely a man for special releases. Remember his last ep "the repeating thoughts..." on Resting Bell, containing 2 - no! - 4, or better, 5 tracks? "music for moles" contains 10 tracks and this time no track repeats, I promise. The songs were mostly recorded during the "the repeating thoughts..." sessions and they are all beautiful folk-sketches in a pretty rough stage. And because of the raw outfit I'll also give you a pretty sketchy release description, based on the notes gillicuddy gave to me:

- Consider the whole thing as sort of a "fragmentary musical fairy tale"
- The genre tag of the audio files is (fittingly) set to "soundtrack"
- This is "krtek": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mole_%28Zden%C4%9Bk_Miler_character%29
- It's been recorded with the memo function of a Sony Ericsson K550i mobile phone

So you can see: It's about moles, it has kind of a concept and it's been recorded with a mobile phone. Make your own picture and enjoy it.

You might remember slow by his "room phive"-release on Resting Bell last December, or for the "Love"-EP on Autoplate. If not, slow is the moniker of Sergey Suokas, a russian composer in the fields of techno (as Suokas) and soulful and hypnotic ambient-music (as slow).

His new release "dual box" can be seen as a meditation on the "Flower of Life". This geometrical figure is a composition of multiple evenly-spaced, overlapping circles, that are arranged so that they form a flower-like pattern with a sixfold symmetry like a hexagon. In combination with triangles and cubes you get a sacred geometry which has references in most of the commons religions and spiritual ways.

Every single track on "dual box" is dedicated to a circle in the geometrical figure. Starting with "chinatown", you get from a very clam and percussive piece to warm multiple guitar-layers, repetitive synth-elements and little miniature compositions. A beautiful and complete concept.

And not to forget: Ian Hawgood mastered this release with calm hands and very sensitive ears. Thanks a lot for your work, Ian.

"The Psychiatric Years EP" is rescued material from TCBP, about 4-5 years old, compiled into two EPs. "Vol. 2" contains 8 tracks. All rather short, between 1:30 and 3:30 minutes. And the tracks can be seen as little folk-tales. Main themes are rebellion, madness, loneliness, despair and death. And so the mood swings between dark, melancolic and engrossed.

The recording-quality is pretty low but in my ears that gives the record a charming outfit. You can hear footsteps, screaming, radios in the background. But all these elements give the songs a great ambience.

Just some words about The Cherry Blues Project: The Cherry Blues Project was formed in 2001 as a soundart project in Argentina. It was created by two members that use the pseudonymns "Cherry" & "Blues". Until today they released a big number of albums and material, mainly focused on experimental and improvisational music.

The Cherry Blus Project, a two-people-project from argentina, was one of the first artists on Resting Bell. They are mainly known for more experimental music, field recordings, noise and improvisation. For their "new" release on Resting Bell they did something you wouldn't expect.

They recorded a folk record. "The Psychiatric Years EP" is rescued material from TCBP, about 4-5 years old, compiled into two EPs. All the material is folk music. Songs with melodies and structures, mostly done with guitar and voice. The production sounds really noisy in some places. Hisses, background-noises, rough sketches of songs and ideas. A great meeting between traditional song-structures and a growning experimental background.

Keep your eyes open and watch out for part 2 of this recording.

Ennio Mazzon is an Italian sound artist. I first heard of him as a remixer of Off Land's "Input Shape". But he did netaudio-releases on Audiotalaia and Timetheory and a CDr-release on his own imprint "Ripples Recordings", as well as various sampler-contributions.

"The Possibility Of Joy" contains 4 tracks with a complete duration of about 22 minutes. Most of the material seems to be generated with synthesizers and electronical equipment with a little addition of field recordings in some parts. The sound is based between athmospherical, clean sounds and noisy, distorted parts, opening up a wide range of listening-impressions. Creating noise on one hand but also beatiful emerging melodies within these loud and massive soundwalls.

To speak with Ennio's words: "I want to transform the natural silence." So close your eyes and drift through all the different layers of granulations, distortions and glitches.

strom noir is a project of Emil Matko, born in 1979 and now living in Bratislava, Slovakia. He is wellknown from his releases on u-cover (ylomejja, kruhyNAvode), ambsine (luvyoo) and format noise (lorawa).

"kueyen" brings you six athmospheric ambient-experimental tracks, built mainly with electric and acoustic guitar loops, synth-layers and some well-arranged field-recording elements. Deep, sometimes really dark droning elements, repetitive melodic structures and more abstract electronic sounds were composed to six works with a big ambience and a little melancholic touch. Especially the combination between the rougher guitar loops and the cleaner synth-parts opens up a new and wide soundworld to the listener.

A great release to enjoy the last summer evenings here in Europe. Please lay back, watch the stars above you and enjoy "kueyen".

Bas van Huizen is a sound and visual artist (video/animation) from Nijmegen the Netherlands. You may know him from his "Ontgalman"-release on test tube or from his physical releases on Etherkreet records. A label focusing on electroacoustic and improvised music, which he runs together with Ezra Jacobs.

"Wegwerpwee" contains 8 tracks. According to Bas most of the material is older than "Ontgalman", but he mixed and remastered everything for this release. And it is a wonderful piece of electroacoustic-experimental-ambient-music. "Wegwerpwee" has a rough, down-to-earth, handmade touch. Very drony, with background-noises, hisses, crackles, melody layers, all mixed and set together very carefully and subtly.

Please also have a listen to "Ontgalman" at test tube and his output on Etherkreet. And to maximise your pleasure: Make sure to listen with headphones.

IJO is audrius vaitiekunas from klaipeda, lithuania. IJO is most well known for his energetic, drill and bass music that fuses together pop aesthetics, avant-garde noise with jazz-inspired, lyrical synth melodies. But that is only one side of the story. IJO also produces beautiful and inspiring ambient music.

On his EP "The White Out" you will find 5 tracks, all rather short, between three and five minutes. All together about 20 minutes, but beautifully involving and with a very strong melodic touch.

From the first track on, "The White Out" covers you with a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. You can hear dreamy synth-landscapes, slowly shifting and emerging, little melody-spots and some rare field-recording elements, added at the right moments.

A great ambient experience with links to pop and electronica. Please enjoy.

I'm writing these words from Qingdao, China where this collection of songs sound like they're from outer space compared to the syrupy love songs that blast out of the speakers here. These pieces take me back to my years in my studio apartment off McAllister Street in San Francisco. Often, as I'd watch the evening fog roll by pass Twin Peaks out of my kitchen window, I'd play my guitar; and sometimes on those special nights angels would visit, allowing my fingers to miraculously play themselves.

The recordings are of various objective quality due to bad recording technique ('Sagano' was recorded on an IPod mic). But when I tried to rerecord some of the songs I discovered that I preferred the original versions because they had the most honest emotion. In the end I decided to just keep them, warts and all, as a document of that time. Basically what you hear is me in my cramped kitchen talking to myself by banging, scraping, and caressing six steel strings on a plank of wood.

I don't know where these songs come from; but I know it is a dark restless place. So in that spirit, here is a collection of lullabies for the sleepless who hold a special place in my heart.
