Robert Curgenven - Silent Landscapes

RATED: 9 / 10
reviewed by Christopher McFall

'Silent Landscapes' is the first release I've heard by sound artist Robert Curgeven. In retrospect of my listening experience thus far, I've enjoyed this release and I think it offers many rewards for the attentive listener.

When I first read the title for this release, my immediate thought was that the work would maintain an ambient thumbprint throughout the duration with little happening. Thankfully, this is not the case at all. 'Silent Landscapes' is an appropriate title in relation to some of the work presented however this release comes with a couple of twists that guide the listener through some intense sound dynamics. All in all, the work definitely reminds me a bit of work I've heard previously in relation to Thomas Tilly's monkier 'TO.' A considerable portion of sound morphology is dedicated to "snaps, crackles and pops" however I'd venture to assert that Curgeven's workings are a bit more subtle. The sound quality is really clear and pristine with this one. Yes, I'll have some more, please.
