A fraction is a quantity of substance after breaking up of this same substance. Fourm uses this idea on field recordings from the Miro Museum and from the Mies Van Der Rohe House in Barcelona for his release Fraction (Residual Presences). This almost 23 minutes counting piece of music is released on the young label Koyuki.
Fourm is the project of Baz Nichols who has an interest in the possibilities of silence in music, which he dubbed as "quietism". One could think of the work done by musicians such as Francisco Lopez, or a more classical approach such as John Cage, but Fourm has quite another way of working on this release. From the recordings that were made pieces are used and manipulated in to fractions of what the sound actually was. At some points the source might be traceable while at others it's only a wild guess what it might have been. The music on Fraction (Residual Presences) is of the low volume kind. In between the fractions of recordings there sometimes is just a soft hum that keeps the rest of the sounds connected.
Fraction (Residual Presences) is a release that reminds me of some of the work done by musicians such as Roel Meelkop and Bernhard Günter but it could use slightly more work with a wider sound spectrum. Now it all sounds slightly flat to me at points. But overall the idea and the outcome are well done. |
