A project that thanks its name to this website, this can mean two things: 1) Someone is a huge fan of us (yes, just admit it, you are) or 2) Someone involved with this website site got an idea of using the name. In the case of EARLabs 3 it is safe to say the second option counts here. Three of our own editors joined forces, being Jos Smolders, Christopher McFall and Sasch Neudeck.
For their first release Helix the threesome has been swapping music files over the internet without ever meeting each other.
With three different musicians you get three different specialties: Christopher's trademark is field-recordings and sub-aquatic dronings, Jos also works with field-recordings but his renditions are not so much drone based, but more arranged with a mathematical precision and Sascha again shares this love for field-recordings, but adds a more tonal and harmonious touch to the sound with self-programmed devices. As duos they worked on pieces delivering us a total of 7 pieces named after the people involved and the direction the files went. For example there is a track called JSJ which is Jos Sascha Jos and another track is SCS which is Sascha Christopher Sascha. Because of this approach all tracks show their own specific signature.
Combining these different forces could lead to different results, but these men managed to deliver an interesting album which offers loads of listening pleasure. All the elements they use come back in this release making it a diverse album; though because of the collaborative process there is still this always returning connection. With this Helix became a great album which makes me long for more. And rumours say this might eventually even happen sometime in the not so far away future. I would say: bring it on, bring it on.
