Low-Point is doing pretty well with their latest few releases, coming from the deep underground but slowly gaining more and more fans for their releases. While they are floating with the at this moment popular minimal drone ambient, they also do a good job in searching young talented people to release. Like this new double cd by the only 24 year old musician Kyle Bobby Dunn. First part of the release A Young Person's Guide To Kyle Boby Dunn has been previously released on the mp3 label Moodgadget, but is now presented in full quality added with over 1 hour of extra material recorded in the same period.
Kyle Bobby Dunn presents himself as a composer for classical instruments, but creates modern pieces of ambient music. Minimal pieces of soundscapes and harmonics. Though, while it may seem this easy at first when you listen careful a deep world appears, one of more complex structures and a rich sound palette. Unlike many of his fellow musicians in the same field of music there are points in the music where the original instruments are easy recognizable instead of filtered and stretched and broken. With these he knows to create pieces of music that keep on calling up two names: Stars of the Lid and Celer. Kyle Bobby Dunn mixes there music needlessly in to each other. There are the melodic horns and strings from Stars of the Lid and the ethereal soundscapes from Celer. These combined deliver a set of melancholic moments, a scenery of traveling through vast rural landscapes. At first glance you see minimal changes, though when you look better you become aware of the diversity in the country. On this lovely Sunday in early March it is a pleasure how the soft tones by Dunn come together with the blue sky, the setting sun and the distant church tower painting the sky.
The first set of tracks really fits together, telling a story and one would think that adding all the extra material would break with this flow. Though, the opposite is true. The extra material fits very well with the previously released tracks and it makes me wonder even why they weren't in the collection at first already. The highlight of the album is even among these pieces: Sets Of Four (Its Meaning Is Deeper Than Its Title Implies) is with its piano play a piece to really grab the attention. It is a melody that knows to impress with the art of minimalism. Why play more notes then needed.
A young person's guide to Kyle Bobby Dunn is an impressive album which promises a bright future for this young musician. Kyle Bobby Dunn is one to keep your eyes and ears open for. |
