Mothboy is the alias of London-based artist Simon Smerdon. Before Mothboy, Simon Smerdon was part of the UK-punk and hardcore scene until he decided to go solo as Mothboy in the early 2000's. Two albums by Mothboy has been released on German label Ad Noiseam, with the latest released in 2006, "Deviance", being the masterwork of Simon Smerdon. Almost four years has passed since the launch of "Deviance", so it was of great excitement to hear what stylish development, Mothboy has run through. And there certainly is some change in the stylish expression on this new album titled "Bunny". Even though it might sound as some cliche this new shot reveals some maturity in comparison to "Deviance". Even though there a plenty of upbeat electronic moments on "Bunny" there are also moments where Mothboy returns to the source of acoustic inspired sounds on this one. One common denominator of the two full-lengths released by Mothboy on the Ad Noiseam-label is the fairly great span of expressions throughout the album playtime. Some tracks on the album (i.e. "Move (too close)" and "Version 2 (Pontcanna stone)", puts much emphasis on the reggae/dub-inspired scene, where others point towards funky moments such as the disco-inspired track "Motion control" and the jazzy downbeat track "Cala nova". Towards the end of the album acoustic expressions saturates the spheres peaking with the manic track "My love" that thanks to the energetic guitar-psychedelia recalls the golden days of german krautrock-band NEU! and with the shoegaze-like drum'n'bass track "Glow". Another interesting moment on the album is the album's darkest piece "I can't wait until tomorrow night" built on hip hop beats and being one of the few exlusively instrumental pieces. Most tracks of the album features vocals from a number of interesting artists. "Bunny" is said to be the final chapter of Mothboy. If that is the truth, this is a truely excellent swan song to this talented artist calling himself Mothboy. |
