RATED: 8 / 10

A pleasant collaboration between two musicians with a complete different background. A combination of folk music and experimental electronic music.

Last year we reviewed the album Oaks by musician/composer Ethan Rose. On that album he presented a delicate ambient sound; clean and easy-listening seemed to be the main line in his music. Now he is back in collaboration with singer Laura Gibson.
Laura Gibson has a background in neo-Americana folk and is compared with singers such as Josephine Foster and Joanna Newsom.

On their first work together, Bridge Carols, they weave together their different backgrounds to create a unique sound. They started out with soundscapes, created by Rose, which got filled up in the empty spaces with vocalizations by Gibson. Inspired by the sketches that were now created Rose started creating new parts of the music on mainly acoustic instruments. To finish all things off eventually Gibson repeated her vocals to completely fit with the music. All things put together by Rose is what we hear on this album.

The result is an album with 9 songs which deliver a nostalgic feeling to the times where life was less hectic, a time where a farmer was walking in the meadow with his sheep. While the music has traditional instruments in it the sounds are all treated in such away most sources aren´t recognized as such anymore. The electronic sounds are dreamy with soft glitches but in such a way it fits with the folk vocals by Gibson.
The music is bringing experimental sounds in an accessible easy-listening way.

While when hearing Bridge Carols is an album that can easily please the fans of the solo music by Laura Gibson (and other indie/folk female singers) and the fans of the solo music by Ethan Rose. It is not an album to play very often after each other, but without a doubt one to play on a lovely sunny day, just to sit back and enjoy the good weather.
