The beginnings of Darren McClure's "Days Away" came into realization by way of a live performance setup Darren used in Tokyo last Novemeber. For this particular outing Darren played in conjunction with Hiroyuki Ura under the moniker of "Content In A Void." Thereafter, Darren began using his performance setup and sound processing techniques to begin a series of new works in his recording studio. The bulk of these techniques involved signal processing, the touching of cables together and handling noise from microphone taps. The result of these manipulations allowed Darren to develop a rich palate of sound material that served to provide the foundation of textures and glitches in "Days Away." The remaining harmonic, drone and sinewave components of the works were created using computer-based manipulations. One of the most interesting aspects of "Days Away" is the element of subtly that pervades these compositions. A perfect example of this is the track "Dawn Movements," whereby the piece progresses in a slow evolving fashion, exhibiting an elegant range of sinewave components juxtapositioned against sonic hums and gentle glitch fragmentation. Another piece, entitled "Counterparts," begins with resonant drones, which become more involved through the gradual introduction of an array of "chiming" sounds that diminish away into a pure sinewave. As a whole, "Days Away" exhibits a sense of exact placement and timing with regard to sound placement, making it a release not to be missed. Additionally, for those interested in the performance in Tokyo last november, the live set of "Content In A Void" has been released on Standardklikmusic. |
